Bio
Dr. Gemme Campbell-Salome is a Postdoctoral Associate conducting research in the Communication in Healthcare Lab and the Family·Health·Lifespan Communication Lab. She received her Ph.D. and Masters in health communication from Texas A&M University. Before joining UF, she completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Genomic Medicine Institute at Geisinger and still maintains an active collaboration with clinician-scientists there. Dr. Campbell-Salome’s research investigates the persistent influence of family communication on individual health decision-making in the contexts of cancer, hereditary cancer, and hereditary cardiovascular conditions. She collaborates closely with genetic clinicians and scientists on federally funded research programs that inform the development of health communication interventions aimed at improving patients’ and their family’s psychological, relational, and health outcomes.
Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, she investigates the relationship between family communication about disease and health outcomes such as cascade testing and medical adherence to recommendations for medical management of hereditary conditions. Her research also explores psychosocial and relational outcomes of family and health communication such as resilience, uncertainty management, narrative sense-making, and family communication environments. She is a true boundary spanner holding dual citizenship in both the health communication science field and genomic medicine & health services and has published her interdisciplinary, translational research in high impact journals across disciplines including Circulation: Genomic and Precision Medicine, Patient Education and Counseling, Journal of Genetic Counseling, Health Education and Behavior, Health Communication, Journal of Family Communication, and Social Science and Medicine.
