The College’s new associate dean for undergraduate affairs and enrollment management plans to help solidify the school’s top-ranked undergraduate program.

Advertising Prof. Michael Weigold steps into this vital role, which includes overseeing the College’s Office of Undergraduate Affairs and consulting students on a wide variety of issues, during a transitional period. This summer, UF is instituting a new budget system, Responsibility Center Management (RCM).

“I enter my position knowing that our College is already an internationally recognized leader in mass communication education and research,” said Weigold, who joined the faculty in 1989. “Continuing that legacy makes every day exciting.”

Weigold replaces Master Lecturer Mike Foley, the Hugh Cunningham Professor in Journalism Excellence who temporarily served as an assistant dean of student services.

“Mike Foley did an excellent job for us,” Dean John Wright said. “Now, Mike Weigold is building on the great work of all of his predecessors, including Jon Roosenraad.”

Weigold’s priorities include working with Coordinator of Academic Programs Karen Cody and Program Assistant Sandra Storr to provide students with the best service and colleagues with the most comprehensive information.

“We want to help to develop and encourage entrepreneurial activities that are vital for ensuring that we have the resources needed to continue as the finest journalism and communications college in the nation,” said Weigold, who’s participating in the UF Leadership Academy.

Weigold also plans to boost the office’s communication.

“We’ll continue to engage students through multiple communications channels,” he said. “Right now, we’re doing so via Preview, our website, e-mails and through personal interactions. I’d like to see us expand to social media such as Facebook, Twitter and even text messaging. These are the media that dominate our students’ lives, so I’m happy to engage them there.”

Weigold, who received his doctorate in psychology from UF in 1989 and his bachelor’s from the State University of New York at Albany in 1980, has won the College’s Teacher of the Year, International Teacher of the Year, TIP, and Research awards. He’s directed the College’s Study Abroad Program for seven years.

“I love working with students,” he said, “and I look forward to meeting as many as I can.”
