Andrew Selepak Comments on Reaction to Florida’s Social Media Ban on Children’s Accounts
Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology instructional assistant professor, is quoted in “Young TikTok Star in Lake City Reacts to Florida’s New Social Media Ban” posted on wcjb.com on March 25.
The story focuses on a new Florida law taking effect at the end of 2024 that will ban children from using social media platforms. Teenagers, ages 14 and 15, will have the option to opt-in with parental permission.
According to Selepak, research shows social media was a factor in many mental health issues teens are facing and this law is aimed at reversing a trend.
“Back in the day, bullying occurred when you got on the school bus until you got off the school bus. Now bullying is 24/7. Bullying is on social media all the time,” Selepak said.
