Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology instructional assistant professor, is featured in “House to Vote on TikTok Ban: Here’s What You Need to Know” posted on CNBC.com on March 8.

Selepak and NBC and MSNBC Legal Analyst Danny Cevallos appeared on CNBC’s “Power Lunch” to discuss the impending Congressional vote to ban the social platform TikTok in the U.S.  The U.S. House passed a bill on March 13 that could ban TikTok.

According to Selepak, “Data security is a big issue that we are hearing about and it’s how the Chinese government could, in essence, get access to the 170 million American users who are on TikTok and use their data. The data could be used for various nefarious purposes including spying on journalists or spying on politicians depending on who is using it. The other big issue is how the Chinese government could essentially manipulate the algorithm to deliver different content to an American audience or a foreign audience.”

He adds, “All apps and all websites sell data, but the concern comes from what data is Tiktok specifically collecting and how are they using it.”
