David Cuillier Comments on Possible School District Public Records Violation

David Cuillier, director of the  Brechner Freedom of Information Project, is quoted in “School District Removes Letter from Online Despite Parents’ Bill of Rights Clause” published in The Gainesville Sun on Sep. 22.

The article focuses on the creation of a club at Gainesville High School that potentially violated state and federal laws. The aim of the new club was to assist minority male children throughout high school and into college. A letter of appeal that should have been added to the Alachua County School Board agenda was initially available for review, but then abruptly removed from the public record.

According to Cullier, “Some government agencies over the years have been known to ‘clawback’ records after first publishing them out of an abundance of caution for investigations. But the Parents’ Bill of Rights seems clear, regardless of district policy.”

“They’re probably playing it safe,” said Cuillier, “If the state law says they have to make it public, they have to follow the law.”
