David Cuillier, director, Brechner Freedom of Information Project, was quoted in “Nebraska Governor’s Use of ‘Executive Privilege’ to Withhold Records Troubles Transparency Advocates” published on flatwaterfreepress.org on Aug. 17.

The article focuses on Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen’s use of “executive privilege” to deny media requests seeking access to email messages. Executive privilege is not included in Nebraska’s public record laws. Some press freedom advocates have found this action disturbing.

According to Cuillier, “The governor’s not saying no to the Flatwater Free Press, he’s saying no to two million people – he’s shutting down two million people from getting information that they’re probably entitled to see.

He adds, “Those in power want to keep their power. Information is power, so you keep it to yourself.”
