UFCJC Students Receive NATAS 2023 Suncoast Chapter Student Production Awards and Scholarships
Two University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) student films and two news reports received first-place honors in the National Academy of Arts and Sciences (NATAS) 2023 Suncoast Chapter Student Production Awards competition. In addition, three of the 18 NATAS Suncoast Chapter academic scholarships were awarded to UFCJC students.
Two films were honored in the Fiction – Long Form category:
- “Indecision,” by Media Production, Management, and Technology (MPMT) seniors Callie Carpinteri, Katrina Lee, Emilee Ford, and Eric Gorday, B.S. Telecommunication 2022, and Garrett Robles, B.S. Telecommunication 2022, was created in MPMT Lecturer Iman Zawahry’s Narrative Collaborative Filmmaking course.
- “Dichotomy” by Amia Davis, M.A.M.C. 2023 and B.S. Telecommunication 2022, was created as part of the Professional Master’s Program under the direction of Program Director and Advertising Lecturer Elizabeth Calienes. Zawahry served as the faculty adviser.
In the Magazine Program category, the winner was “Hurricane Ian: The Aftermath” by the WUFT News student staff under the direction of Innovation News Center (INC) Interim Director Harrison Hove. In the News Report – Light News category, “Flying Golf Carts,” by Ophelie Jacobson, B.S. Journalism 2023, received the top spot. MPMT Assistant In Mark Leeps served as the adviser.
UFCJC Journalism students who received NATAS Suncoast Chapter Scholarships included sophomore Kimberly Blum, junior Bianca Smith and freshman Alexis Vivanco.
The fifth annual Suncoast Student Production Awards encourage the pursuit of excellence in video production and focus public attention on outstanding achievements produced by college, university and high school students.
The Suncoast Chapter also offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors and to college and university students who reside within the Suncoast Region, which includes the State of Florida, the State of Louisiana, the Mobile-Pensacola Market area, and Puerto Rico.
The awards and scholarships were presented virtually on June 2.
