Two UFCJC Students Selected for 2023 FCI Student Climate Fellows Program

University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) master’s student Sophia Donskoi and Journalism junior Alan Halaly were two of the six students selected for the 2023 Florida Climate Institute (FCI) Student Climate Fellows Program.

The FCI Student Climate Fellows program is an opportunity open to undergraduate and recent graduate students. They will work with a faculty member and earn a stipend for engaging in climate-related research that will help enable communities to take action to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate.

Donskoi’s research project will engage advertising industry professionals to create a style guide to better communicate climate science using an online open-source toolkit. Halaly’s project will explore the potential impacts of high-hazard dams in Florida on humans and ecosystems through multimedia reporting and education. Cynthia Barnett, UFCJC Environmental Journalist-in-Residence, will serve as their faculty mentor.

Journalism senior Katie Delk served as a 2022 FCI Student Climate Fellow also under the mentorship of Barnett. She focused on the impact of climate change on Florida’s farmers and how they are adapting. Her first story, “After Hurricane Ian, Sowing Hope,” was published on wuft.org on Dec. 19, 2022. Delk is working on another story in this series focusing on the effect of heat on blueberry farming. The story will be published later this spring.
