Great Storytellers Presents Essdras Suarez, Jan. 26, 2023
Essdras Suarez, B.S. Journalism 1993 and CJC Hall of Fame 2010, visited Weimer Hall on Jan. 26, 2023 to share his journey from the College to winning two Pulitzer Prizes for photojournalism. Suarez was interviewed by Houston Wells, senior lecturer in the Media Production, Management, and Technology Department.
Suarez started his photojournalism career as an intern for the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel and Rocky Mountain News. The Rocky Mountain News hired him after 18 months and, during his time there, won his first Pulitzer Prize covering the Columbine massacre.
He left the Rocky Mountain News in 2002 for The Boston Globe, where he worked for 12 years. At the Globe, he covered the beginning of the Iraq war in 2003, the Indonesian Tsunami aftermath in 2007, and an award-winning project called “Crossing Divides” – a look at life in eight different countries. He received his second Pulitzer Prize as part of the team that covered the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013.
Other national awards include the Robert F. Kennedy International Photojournalism Award for “Osveli’s Journey,” about a 14-year-old Guatemalan boy who died after being smuggled into the US and his journey back home to be buried.
