Students will collaborate with peers and industry professionals on real-world projects and network with CJC alumni in New York City during this 1-credit course. 

Students in this program compete in a hands-on team pitching competition that simulates the demands of communications agencies. They collaborate with peers and industry professionals, visit public relations and advertising agencies and participate in cultural activities. 

Dates: The course meets throughout Summer A with one week in NYC from June 2-7. 

Course: PUR4324: CJCxNYC One Week

Credits: 1

Eligibility

• Undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Journalism and Communications 
• 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA
• In good standing with the University; no honor code or conduct violations
• Undergraduate students must be eligible to take “PUR4324: CJCxNYC One Week” as an elective (1 credit). Prerequisite: One of the following with a C or better: PUR3000, ADV3008, RTV2100 or JOU3101. 
• Graduate students must be eligible to take MMC6936: Professional Master’s Practicum. 

Selection Process

• The CJCxNYC team will review applications thoroughly and make student selections. 
• Incomplete applications will not be considered. 
• Approximately 20 students will be selected. 
• Decisions will be made the week of Feb. 5.
• Selected students will need to confirm participation to be enrolled in the 1-credit course. 

Students in this program create multimedia content with sports communicators in NYC, visit to sports-focused organizations, attend games and participate in other local activities. 

Dates: The course meets throughout Summer B with one week in NYC from July 21-26.

Course: JOU4930: One Week in NYC – Sports@CJC Edition 

Credits: 1

Eligibility

• Undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Journalism and Communications. Sports management majors can apply and will be considered on an individual basis. 
• 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA
• In good standing with the University; no honor code or conduct violations
• Undergraduate students must be eligible to take “JOU4930: One Week in NYC – Sports@CJC Edition” as an elective (1 credit). Prerequisite: One of the following with a C or better: PUR3000, ADV3008, RTV2100 or JOU3101. 
• Graduate students must be eligible to take MMC6936: Professional Master’s Practicum.

Selection Process

• The CJCxNYC team will review applications thoroughly and make student selections.

• Approximately 20 students will be selected.

Through our Immersive Summer program, students will complete an 8- to 12-week full-time, paid internship and participate in social events, local activities and other exciting city highlights to experience the culture and energy of NYC. 

• Dates: May/June – Aug. 2024, as established by employer (Summer C) 
• Course: PUR4940, ADV4940, RTV4940, JOU4940 or MMC6949
• Credits: 0-3 
• Total Hours & Pay: Hours will vary by employer. All employers have committed to an internship pay rate that meets NYC’s minimum wage requirements. 

Eligibility

• • Undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Journalism and Communications 
  • 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA
  • In good standing with the University; no honor code or conduct violations
  • Undergraduate junior or senior standing (minimum of 60 credits completed) or graduate student eligible to take an internship. 
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. International students who have questions about their status should contact their UFIC adviser.
  • Must be eligible to take an internship in your department for credit (0-3 credits). Course codes are: PUR4940, ADV4940, RTV4940, JOU4940 or MMC6949. Departmental approval upon acceptance. 
  • Graduating students who meet all other criteria are eligible to apply.

Selection Process 

• A panel of faculty, staff and alumni will review the applications and provide their recommendations for finalists for the immersive summer program. Students may be asked to participate in a brief interview with CJC faculty. 
• Students will be notified the week of Feb. 5 if they have been selected as finalists and will move into the employer interview and hiring process. Finalists are not guaranteed an internship.
• Participating communication agencies and organizations will receive and review finalists’ applications and contact students for interviews. Students may be interviewed by multiple organizations. 

• Organizations will extend offers to students directly. We ask organizations to extend offers by end of April, but some do so later.  
• Students who have progressed to this stage but do not receive an interview or offer may participate in one of the two One Week in NYC programs, space permitting. 

Spend 10 weeks immersed in the media and communications industry in New York City this fall with CJCxNYC. Gain valuable professional experience as you complete real-world work and projects in a dynamic environment. Industry leaders and mentors will share their perspectives, feedback and support throughout the course. 

Dates: The course meets during the fall semester. Students will be in New York City from Sept. 9 – Nov. 22, 2024. Students should plan to arrive before Sept. 9. 

Course: PUR3942: CJCxNYC Immersive Fall

Credits: 3

If you are selected for this course, you will need to enroll in only online courses for fall 2024. 

Eligibility

• Undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Journalism and Communications 
• 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA
• In good standing with the University; no honor code or conduct violations
• Departmental approval upon acceptance
• Prerequisite: One of the following with a C or better: PUR3000, ADV3008, RTV2100 or JOU3101. 
• Ideal applicants would be eligible to complete an internship in their respective majors. 

Selection Process

• Faculty and staff at CJC will review the applications to ensure they meet the criteria and provide their recommendations for finalists.
• Finalists will be invited to a brief interview with Prof. Natalie Asorey. 
• Reference checks will be completed, as needed. 
• Approximately 10-12 students will be selected. 
• Decisions will be made by March 1.
• Selected students will need to confirm participation to be enrolled in the 3-credit course.

Participating in CJCxNYC requires several significant commitments. Consider if you will be able to meet the following requirements before submitting an application.

• Enroll in the designated elective or internship course and commit for the duration of the program.
• Comply with all health and safety rules, including those related to COVID-19, established by your employer and any organizations we visit through the program. 
• For Immersive Summer: Meet the minimum academic internship hours and complete the entire internship, as mutually agreed upon in the hiring process with my employer. If hours/weeks are not met, you may not report participating in CJCxNYC on your resume or receive a letter of recommendation from your employer.
• For Immersive Fall: Enroll in only online courses for the fall semester. 
• Attend all required pre-program meetings. 

All costs are approximate.

Tuition

Tuition for CJCxNYC is the same as on-campus tuition and will vary depending on total credits. Students who receive or need to receive aid should meet with the UF Office of Student Financial Aid & Scholarships to discuss their situation prior to applying to the program. 

We also encourage you to apply to The Knight Division Internship Scholarship, which is a need-based scholarship awarded on a rolling basis to students completing an internship away from their hometown. See more scholarship information below. 

Housing

Live and work in one of the greatest cities in the world – just minutes from Central Park, Madison Square Garden, The Empire State Building and many other exciting places. There are numerous housing options available, whether it be a college dorm or an apartment sublease. 

Students are responsible for planning, booking and paying for their housing in the summer and fall semesters. CJCxNYC does not sponsor housing, but we have gathered a list of popular options at various price points and locations you can consider.

Hotel accommodations will be coordinated for students who participate in the One Week in NYC programs, but students should plan to cover hotel costs. We’re fundraising to help offset expenses, and we’ll keep you informed of changes. 

Transportation

Major airlines offer direct flights from Florida to New York City. You may arrive in one of three airports: JFK in Brooklyn, LGA in Queens or EWR in Newark, NJ. The subway and bus are the most common ways to get around New York City. You can pay for the MTA Metrocard per ride ($2.90 one way) or purchase a 7-day ($34) or 30-day unlimited pass ($132). You can also use ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft, walk or hail a taxi. 

Personal Expenses

This includes groceries/meals, entertainment, personal excursions, etc. This price varies with every student. Students should budget for these expenses. Some activities will be covered by the program.  

We know living in New York City can be expensive. That’s why since 2022 we’ve provided more than $50,000 in scholarships to students participating in the CJCxNYC program. And we’re working on scholarship funding for 2024 too. 

We’ve also curated a list of scholarship opportunities to help you meet your financial needs. Though we encourage you to apply to one or more scholarships, please do not rely solely on scholarship funds for the program. 

The Knight Division Internship Scholarship 

This scholarship aims to assist current undergraduate students at CJC with expenses for internships that are outside of Gainesville and the student’s hometown. These scholarships will require need eligibility and documentation of an eligible credit earning internship program.
