Jordan Alpert To Present Vaping and Instagram Research During Aug. 26 Webinar
Jordan Alpert, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Advertising assistant professor, will present the findings of his recent article “Vaping and Instagram: A Context Analysis of e-Cigarette Posts Using the Content Appealing to Youth (CAY) Index” at the Research Into Action webinar on Aug. 26. The event is sponsored by the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America and the Geographic Health Equity Alliance.
The original article, co-authored by Alpert, Advertising Associate Professor Huan Chen, doctoral students Yoo Jin Chung and Yu Angela Mu, and University of West Florida Assistant Professor Heather Riddell, was published in Substance Use & Misuse, Vol. 56, 2021 – Issue 6, on March 22, 2021
In the webinar, Alpert will discuss the article’s findings regarding the characteristics of popular social media posts related to electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) on Instagram. Study results found that nearly all images were color photographs and 84 percent featured an ENDS device as the focal point. In addition, commonly used promotional tactics, such as humor, presence of vapor puffs and flavors, were rarely used. Alpert will address the implications for coalitions addressing media literacy skills to educate young adults about ENDS content viewed on social media.
