CJC Student Journalists Collaborate on Homelessness Series
A consortium of student reporters from seven journalism schools including the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) produced “Nowhere to Go,” focusing on the plight of the homeless in the U.S. Originally published in May on wuft.org, the Associated Press will now handle national distribution of the multimedia collaboration.
The project, which was led by The Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at the University of Maryland, began in fall 2019 when student reporters fanned out across the country to find stories on the homeless and how communities are responding. Despite challenges posed by the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the collaboration produced more than two dozen stories from eight states and 15 cities — national investigative pieces, a long-form narrative, explanatory stories, case studies, a podcast, photos, videos and graphics.
Using tools like Zoom, WebEx, Slack, Google Drive and Dropbox, the students continued reporting, acquiring and analyzing data, editing and sharing photos and video, and producing digital graphics and websites. The students collaborated with each other and their editors to produce the project.
In addition to UFCJC, participating schools included the University of Oregon, Boston University, Stanford University, the University of Arkansas and Arizona State University. Support for the collaboration came from the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Park Foundation.
