Norm Lewis Selected as Cox/Palm Beach Post Professor in New Media
Norm Lewis, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism associate professor, has been named to the College’s James M. Cox, Jr. Foundation/The Palm Beach Post Professorship in New Media.
The professorship was endowed in 1998 by the James M. Cox Foundation and The Palm Beach Post to support a professorship for teaching, research and experimentation in emerging media. It includes $10,000 annually for a salary increase and $9,000 for activities in support of the role. Dave Carlson held this position until his retirement last year.
Lewis joined the CJC faculty in the fall of 2007 after a 25-year career working at newspapers ranging from The Washington Post to three smaller dailies in the Pacific Northwest where he served in various positions including reporter, editor and publisher. His academic research focuses on newsroom culture and ethics.
He is the recipient of a 2018 Fulbright Scholar Award and is on sabbatical for the 2018-19 academic year to teach at the Gulf University for Science and Technology in Kuwait. He will study data journalism in the Middle East, a region that currently has no university-level data program, and where relatively few professionals have been exposed to data journalism techniques.
