Carma Bylund and Jordan Alpert Receive Pilot Grant to Research the Use of Telemedicine During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Carma Bylund, Public Relations associate professor at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) and associate professor in the Division of Hematology & Oncology at the UF College of Medicine, and Jordan Alpert, CJC Advertising assistant professor, are the recipients of a pilot grant through the UF Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s (CTSI) “Rapid-Response Translational Research Projects to Address COVID-19 Pandemic.”

Their project, “Doctor-Patient Cancer Communication through Telemedicine during COVID-19,” will focus on the shift to telemedicine for healthcare delivery during the pandemic. The change has had an impact on cancer care communication, prognosis and treatment decision-making. The goal of this project is to provide evidence-based guidance for oncologists who now communicate with patients using technology and to provide easily accessed answers to UF Health Cancer Center cancer patients’ most frequently asked questions about COVID-19.

The pilot grant is specifically for a translational research project that can be rapidly mobilized to help address the COVID-19 pandemic. It must be accomplished in six months or less and contribute new knowledge that can inform the COVID-19 response and lay critical groundwork for subsequent research when additional funding opportunities emerge.
