Jasmine McNealy Shares Insights on the Dangers of Doxxing
Jasmine McNealy, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Telecommunication assistant professor, was interviewed on public radio station WORT-FM in Madison, Wis. on May 21. “The Dangers of Doxxing” was broadcast during the “8 O’Clock Buzz” hosted by Brian Standing.
In the interview, McNealy explains that “doxxing” is the deliberate exposure of personal information on the internet, and that over the past several months, activists have used it to expose activists and fuel protests. She answered questions on the ethical or pragmatic repercussions or boundaries for releasing this information. She also discussed whether the rules should be different for media companies or journalists than for the public.
McNealy adds that she does not tell her students to self-censor, but cautions them to be careful. She reminds them that revealing personal information could expose someone to significant harm.
McNealy also discussed doxxing issues in a recent The Conversation article.
