CJC Telecommunication Junior Receives Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar Award
Amaury Sablon, a University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Telecommunication junior, received an Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar Award at the Foundation’s 2017 OPC Scholar Awards Luncheon in New York City. Sablon was among 15 aspiring foreign correspondents selected by a panel of leading journalists from a pool of 175 applicants from 50 different colleges and universities.
Sablon was the recipient of the Nathan S. Bienstock Memorial Scholarship. He received the award from Richard Leibner, co-president of Beinstock, a United Talent Agency representing on-air and off-air talent broadcasters. Sablon and his family moved to the U.S. from Cuba nearly 10 years ago. As a college junior, he self-funded a trip to Haiti to cover the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, the subject of his winning essay.
Sablon also has an OPC Foundation fellowship with the GroundTruth Project in Cuba and serves as an anchor on Noticias WUFT, a weekly Spanish-language newscast on public radio station WUFT-FM.
