Clay Calvert Comments on Gawker Media vs. Hulk Hogan Settlement
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project Director Clay Calvert was quoted in the Tampa Bay Times article, Gawker and Hulk Hogan Reach Settlement in Sex Tape Case, published on Nov. 2.
Calvert commented on the outcome of the four-year legal battle between New York online media company Gawker Media and former professional wrestler Terry “Hulk Hogan” Bollea. Billionaire Peter Thiel funded the litigation on behalf of Bollea resulting in a multimillion-dollar settlement. According to Calvert, “Theil created a dangerous playbook for other wealthy individuals to follow who seek revenge against the media….The settlement will not allow the appeals court to address the question of newsworthiness in the context of litigation of a privacy claim.”
