Jasmine McNealy To Be Featured in the Data & Society Speaker Series in January
Jasmine McNealy , University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Telecommunication associate professor, will present “An Ecological Approach to Data Governance” for the Data & Society Databites speaker series in New York City on Jan. 8 at 5 p.m.
The event also will be livestreamed on Data & Society’s website.
McNealy will speak on some of the conflicts that data has spurred including ownership, access, privacy and security. She will trace these conflicts to our perception of data as a singular piece of property and will contend that a better metaphor for data would be that of a networked representation or observation in an ecosystem. McNealy will argue that we require an ecological approach for understanding this era of emergent technology and data — both for creating adequate policy, and for protecting the vulnerable.
The Databites speaker series is geared toward engaging the organization’s network and the broader public on unresolved questions and timely topics of interest. This event is moderated by Data & Society Director of Research Sareeta Amrute.
