Benjamin Johnson Co-Authors Article on Selection and Sharing of Political Issues on Social Media
Benjamin Johnson, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Advertising assistant professor, is a co-author of “Issues, Involvement, and Influence: Effects of Selective Exposure and Sharing on Polarizations and Participation” published in Computers in Human Behavior on Oct. 1.
Johnson, along with Rachel Neo from the University of Hawaii and Marieke Heijnen, Lotte Smits and Caitrina van Veen from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Department of Communication Science, reported on their research “testing the extent of confirmation bias in Dutch Facebook users’ selection and sharing of opinionated news about three political issues.”
Their findings indicate that selective sharing predicted political polarization and participation. Some selectivity effects were strengthened by value or impression involvement and the results varied by issue, which diverged in pre-existing polarization.
