UFCJC Student-Produced Newscast Nominated for National College Emmy Award

WUFT News First at Five,” a student-produced weekday newscast from the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Innovation News Center, has been nominated for a Television Academy Foundation College Television Award in the Newscast category. The 43rd annual competition honors excellence in student-produced programs from colleges nationwide.

The nominated newscast was from Feb. 3, 2023.

The awards, designed to emulate the Emmy Awards, are judged by Television Academy members who choose three nominees in each of seven categories based on industry standards of excellence, imagination and innovation. Each winning project will receive a $3,000 cash prize.

The “WUFT News First at Five” honorees include Taylor Fishman, B.S. Telecommunication 2023; Caroline Chao, B.S. Journalism 2023; Ophelie Jacobson, B.S. Journalism 2023; Emily Ferguson, B.S. Journalism 2023; Chris Will, Journalism senior; and Camila Pereira, B.S. Journalism 2023.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony on the Television Academy’s North Hollywood, California, campus on April 13, 2024. Student nominees will also participate in two days of professional development discussions and networking opportunities with media and industry leaders to support career advancement.

“WUFT News First at Five” was also nominated in the 38th annual College Television Awards competition for a 2016 for newscast featuring Hurricane Hermine’s impact on North Central Florida.
