Jasmine McNealy Authors Opinion Piece on the Need for a Rural AI Agenda

Jasmine McNealy, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology associate professor is author of the opinion piece “We Need an Agenda for Rural Artificial Intelligence (AI)” published by Tech Policy Press on Oct. 10. The piece was also referenced in Politico’s Digital Bridge newsletter published on Oct. 19

McNeely focuses on rural areas in the U.S. outside of population centers and their suburbs. The areas cover 86% of the U.S. landmass and have been in decline even though they are home to one in five U.S. residents.

She writes that there is a digital divide that exists on basic connectivity.

“The Government Accountability Office found that in 2019 nearly 17% of people living in rural areas lack reliable broadband. It’s important that 2019 was right before the start of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, wherein many jobs and schooling moved to remote. The lack of reliable broadband has hampered the ability of those without access to carry on with their lives as best as possible. “

According to McNealy, rural communities are not devoid of AI and automated systems. Rural technology, including AI and other automated systems, should also be a topic of consideration.

She adds, “To truly understand the implications of AI technology for and in rural spaces, and to make better policy, more rural communities must join the discussion. Citizens in rural communities in the South, the Midwest, the Great Plains, and other rural areas all have something to say.”

On Oct. 24-25, UF is hosting an event organized by McNealy focused on rural AI.
