James Babanikos Comments on the State of the Media Industry and Journalism Enrollment
James Babanikos, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communication (UFCJC) associate dean for Undergraduate Affairs, was quoted in “As Journalism Industry Contracts, Universities Brace for Change” published in the Latino Reporter on July 12.
The article focuses on the shrinking journalism industry and the trend toward layoffs in national and local media outlets. Some journalism schools have faced slight declines in enrollment.
According to Babanikos, the declining numbers should not be discouraging to prospective journalism students. “We see layoffs in places like the LA Times almost every week, but I’m optimistic about where our industry is headed. There are many more opportunities for journalism and communications students these days than was the case 10 or 20 years ago.”
