Rachel Grant, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism assistant professor, is the co-author of the opinion piece “We Can’t Overestimate the Power of Representation of Reboots” published on news.ufl.edu on June 28.

Grant and UF Senior Communications Strategist Abby Weingarten focus on the current trend for more minority representation in nostalgic film and television reboots. They examine the cultural impact of the releases, including Disney’s newest live-action movie “The Little Mermaid.”

“Reboots are a part of our nostalgia culture; they allow us to reimagine that time period we loved, but with more complete or complex content,” said Grant. “And representation really does matter in mainstream media, especially for children at early ages. When children see themselves onscreen, through characters like a Black Ariel in ‘The Little Mermaid,’ it adds to the value of their identity.”
