Healing My Inner Child in Paris
By Reighan Sheppard, Journalism Senior
Studying abroad in Paris in January was the best college experience I have had thus far. As soon as I stepped off the plane, I knew I was in for a treat. Though the sun’s tint barely shone through the clouds, it felt as the moment I had been waiting for.
I had been dreaming of going to Europe since I was 10. While London had always been my first choice, Paris was creeping its way up on my list. So, getting the opportunity to go was a dream come true.
I had to quickly learn to adapt to my physical surroundings. Coming from sunny Florida, the brisk 30 degrees Fahrenheit were tough. However, I soon learned social and cultural adaptations were tougher yet.
When my partner Robby Benezra and I began interviewing for our story, I noticed I had to be a little more patient and more amicable. It reminded me that, as a journalist, I must change my reporting style to fit my audience.
Being of Caribbean descent, I am used to having to be more upfront and direct in certain situations. Caribbean families tend to be very blunt. But my multicultural background also taught me to be more patient. It helps me understand different verbal approaches and interactions I encounter. So, even though I had to get through small language barriers, I could handle it. I feel in my element when reporting.
Our abroad experience was built around the Pistons and Bulls basketball game and I think the program was really well planned. It was a great experience for everyone. One change I would make is to incorporate more traditional Parisian tourist sites, but the sports-centered excursions were a pleasure to attend.
One thing that happened, which I was not anticipating, is how much my global perspective on sports changed. I realized how all American sports are not as popular overseas. Many people did not watch basketball or knew very little about it. That was shocking to me because it is one of the most popular sports here in the States, but it was nice to see a shift in perspective.
Having this opportunity to go to Paris is one I will never forget. It opened my eyes and allowed me to detach from my monotonous routine that I was previously in, and it allowed me to appreciate living in the moment and take in everything that comes my way.
