Two UFCJC Students Honored in 2022-23 Hearst Multimedia Innovative Storytelling and Audience Engagement Competition
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism seniors Alexis Ashby and Avery Lotz have placed second and third, respectively, in the 2022-23 Hearst Journalism Awards Multimedia Innovative Storytelling and Audience Engagement competition.
Ashby was honored for the WUFT News Special Report “Behind the Bet: Stories of Illegal Sports Betting on the University of Florida Campus” and Lotz was recognized for “Unintended: Unsecured Guns and Unintended Deaths: A Preventable Epidemic?”.
In this second of three multimedia competitions, entries must demonstrate original and innovative ways to tell stories to engage with audiences using immersive digital tools and techniques. The top three winners will automatically continue to the Multimedia semi-final competition.

The 63rd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program added multimedia to the competition in 2010. The program also includes five writing, two photojournalism and four multimedia competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. There are 105 universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
