Films by University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Media Production, Management, and Technology (MPMT) seniors and an alumnus were recognized in prestigious film festivals.

Emilee Ford was selected as best cinematographer in the 2023 Los Angeles Cinematography Awards (LACA) for “The Aftermath.” The film, written, directed and produced by MPMT senior Callie Carpinteri, is also an official selection of the 2023 LACA. The awards honor films from around the world that demonstrate excellence in the art of cinematography and filmmaking.

Alejandro Avila, B.S. Media Production, Management, and Technology 2022, has been accepted to the 2023 Miami Film Festival CinemaSlam for his film “Endangered Funding.” Avila majored in digital film and television production while at UF and made the film in an independent study with MPMT Lecturer Iman Zawahry based on her narrative collaborative filmmaking class.

CinemaSlam fosters excellence in student filmmaking and exposes students to the value of film festivals in connecting their work with public audiences and industry professionals. One $1,000 grand prize, along with other honors and recognitions, will be awarded to select CinemaSlam finalists during the 2023 Miami Film Festival from March 3-12.

In addition, Carpinteri’s film “InDecision” was accepted to the 2023 Sci-Fi Gainesville Film Festival.” Her film will be shown during the festival at the Santa Fe College Lyceum Theater on Feb. 17-18.

“The Aftermath” and “InDecision” were both created for MPMT Professor and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs James Babanikos’ Dramatic Production class.  This course is designed to teach students the process of how to direct a dramatic video program, using single-camera, film-style technique.
