Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology lecturer and coordinator of the online master’s program with a specialization in social media, is quoted in “Stop the Scroll: Pressure Builds to Ban TikTok on Florida Campuses” posted on wuft.org on Jan. 20.

The story focuses on a possible ban of the popular social media platform TikTok from University devices and from wired and wireless computer networks on the UF  campus.

“The email discouraging TikTok use might be confusing to students who grew up using social media,” said Selepak. “They don’t understand how that data can be used against them. They don’t necessarily have a full grasp of what that means because it’s so ingrained in their every day.”

Selepak was also quoted in “Meta Faces Politically Fraught Decision of Whether to Reinstate Trump’s Account” posted on cbsaustin.com on Jan. 19.

The story focuses on a request by former President Donald Trump’s lawyers to lift his two-year ban from Facebook and Instagram imposed after the Capitol riot on Jan. 6.

“He 100% would go back onto Facebook, and it’s not just because it’s not a comparable company to Truth Social, but he’s going go on there because Facebook is such a huge fundraising platform for him. He’s going to want to raise that money,” said Selepak. “At the same time, it’s the size of the platform with 2.9 billion users, and Facebook has been skewing older who are more likely to be his voters anyhow.”
