Iman Zawahry’s Film “Americanish” Acquired by Sony Pictures International Productions
Sony Pictures International Productions has acquired the global rights to the award-winning comedy “Americanish.” The film by Iman Zawahry, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology lecturer and award-winning filmmaker, marks her feature-length film directorial debut.
“Americanish” is the first American Muslim romantic comedy made by American Muslim women. Directed by Zawahry and written by Aizzah Fatima and Zawahry, the film follows two sisters and their cousin as they navigate love, careers and familial pressures in Jackson Heights, Queens.
“Americanish” has been honored by national and international film festivals including the Grand Prize and Best Narrative Feature Award at the 2022 Amelia Island Film Festival, the Director’s Choice Best Feature Comedy Award from the 2022 Sedona International Film Festival, the 30th Heartland International Film Festival Narrative Feature Grand Prize, and it received Audience Awards from the 2021 New York Asian Film Festival, the CAAMFest 2021 in San Francisco and the Asian CineVision Asian American International Film Festival.
Specific plans for the film’s distribution have not yet been disclosed. Creatives from the film will be on hand to celebrate its acquisition during a January 22 panel at the Sundance Film Festival, sponsored by the MPAC Hollywood Bureau Muslim House and the Islamic Scholarship Fund.
