Taylor Fishman: My time in Munich, Germany
Check out the story I wrote while I was there!
This was the first time I had traveled to Germany and out of the country – so it was definitely an exciting experience early on. From getting that first stamp in my passport to learning all about the history of Munich, it was a trip of a lifetime, especially being able to experience the first NFL game there.
One of my favorite aspects of this trip was how we had the perfect amount of time to sightsee and complete our stories while we were there. I loved having this balance because we were able to see a lot of cool Munich spots while working toward our stories. With the type of environment we were in, I learned a lot about sparking up conversations to talk to people and share their experience through the stories we were writing.
I loved this course not only for the traveling aspect, but because I was challenged as a student. I had never written a story before this, so I loved that I was given the opportunity on multiple occasions to get publications when I otherwise wouldn’t have. I’m really proud of the stories that I have written throughout this semester and my story that I wrote abroad – an experience I wouldn’t have gotten without this class.
I have been an avid football watcher my whole life with my family, so it was really fun to hear about others’ football-watching traditions and talk to people about making the trip to another country just to watch this NFL game. I think already being a fan helped me understand why some people made the trip all the way out to Munich and spent money on the tickets to see the teams play. After talking to so many Europeans about the NFL, I really understand their love for it and how it has become so popular in Europe.
I definitely felt like we had to overcome some language barriers when we had to reword certain questions because certain people weren’t able to understand what we were asking the first time, but other than that we didn’t have a lot of challenges. It honestly went smoother than I thought it would and I was really happy with how my story came out in the end! We also did take the wrong train a few times… but it was part of the experience and learning together!
This trip is one of my favorite memories from college. It has given me real-world experience on sports reporting. Having a first-hand experience of seeing the first NFL game in Germany was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that me and eleven other lucky students got to experience. Again, I am very proud of the story I wrote and I look forward to seeing where the NFL will go in Germany in the next few years. I feel like this experience gave me a new perspective on the NFL and just sports in general – it makes me love it more and want to pursue a career in it even more.
