Justin Bright, B.S. Journalism 2020, M.A.M.C. 2021, is profiled in “Florida Man Skateboards Length of State, 1,100 Miles, for Conservation” published in the Orlando Sentinel on Jan. 28.

Bright is skating more than 1,100 miles from Pensacola to Key West to raise awareness for conservation and land preservation in Florida. He is three weeks into his seven-week journey and has raised more than $2,500 for Conservation Florida, a nonprofit land conservancy that seeks to protect natural and agricultural lands.

Bright is also bringing awareness to the challenges that wildlife face from speeding cars and urban sprawl. As he skates along the shoulders of busy roads, he has gained an understanding of how animals feel as they try to avoid traffic.

However, one of the rewards of Bright’s adventure is the opportunity to experience the beauty of Florida.

“You go through a lot of stuff in 1,100 miles. Florida is this magnificent, diverse land,” Bright said. “It’s this little, tiny peninsula that juts out of an unreal continent with all this biodiversity … There’s lots of different people and environments. I’m excited to continue south.”
