WUFT Receives Two 2021 National Edward R. Murrow Awards in Professional and Student Categories

WUFT-TV and WUFT.org, operated from the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, are the winners of a 2021 National Edward R. Murrow Award in the Small Market Radio Digital category and a first-ever National Student Murrow Award for Excellence in Video Reporting.

Edward R. Murrow AwardsAt the Finish Line” by Tobie Nell Perkins, B.S. Journalism 2020, Sam Thomas, B.S. Journalism 2019, and Mackenzie Behm, B.S. Journalism 2020, were honored in the National Digital category. The multimedia story chronicles the end of greyhound racing in Florida.

Journalism senior Victor Prieto was honored in the National Student Competition for Excellence in Video Reporting for “Beyond the Finish Line.” The story focuses on the obstacles and challenges Chris Nikic overcame to race in an IRONMAN triathlon.

WUFT has received National Murrow Awards in 2019, 2018, 2013 and 2012. This is the first National Student Murrow Award for WUFT since the student competition began in 2015.

Since 1971, RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards. Among the most prestigious in news, the Murrow Awards recognize local and national news stories that uphold the RTDNA Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community. Murrow Award winning work demonstrates the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.

More than 5,200 entries from hundreds of digital and broadcast network journalism organizations competed for the 2021 Edward R. Murrow Awards. The national awards will be presented at a gala event in New York City on Oct. 27.
