John Kaplan, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism professor and winner of the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography, is retiring after 22 years at the College.

During his tenure at CJC, Kaplan’s academic honors include being named a J. William Fulbright Scholar, UF International Educator of the Year, and UF Research Foundation Professor. He has also been named CJC’s Teacher of the Year and Scholar of the Year. His students have won leading collegiate journalism honors, including the Hearst Journalism Awards National Championships and College Photographer of the Year.

While at UF, Kaplan has also been recognized with professional awards, including a Robert F. Kennedy Award for Outstanding Coverage of the Disadvantaged, the Overseas Press Club Award for Feature Photography, multiple CINE Golden Eagle and ADDY awards, and several Best Documentary Film honors. He has been featured on the PBS program, “Now,” on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and his autobiographical film, “Not As I Pictured,” aired nationwide on PBS stations.

Kaplan’s work has been exhibited at museums and galleries worldwide including solo exhibitions in the United States, Peru, Bolivia and Korea as well as shows in China, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Korea, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

In 2019, Kaplan was asked to join the distinguished Nobel Laureates Forum Lectureship series held in China, the first non-Nobel Prize winner invited.
