Yulia Strekalova, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications research assistant professor and director of Grants Development, is the recipient of a 2020 University of Florida First-Generation Champions Award presented by Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars and First-Generation Student Success.

Strekalova was recognized for her continued support of first-generation students by providing valuable research opportunities and experiences. The awards were created in recognition of the National-First Generation College Student Day, officially celebrated on Nov. 8, which commemorates the historic signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

She received the award during a virtual awards ceremony at the J.Wayne Reitz Student Union on Nov. 6.
