Roxane Coche Co-Authors Article on World Cup Soccer Newspaper Front-Page Coverage
Roxane Coche, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Sports Journalism and Communication associate director and Telecommunication assistant professor, is the co-author of “Victory on Their Own Terms: American Front-Page Framing of the USWNT World Cup Championship” published in the Journal of Journalism Practice on Sept. 29.
Coche and Travis Bell from the University of South Florida examined American front-page newspaper coverage the day after the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team defended its FIFA World Cup title in 2019.
According to the authors, “This content analysis indicated the victory was significantly represented on front pages and offered a snapshot of how international success in women’s sport can result in increased media attention in the U.S.”
They added, “Within a nation that gravitates toward ‘American exceptionalism’ in sport, this study highlighted that even winning—if it is within women’s sports—leaves room for journalistic debate whether that accomplishment merits front-page attention, and it hinted at the recurring journalistic ideology that has historically and systematically underrepresented women throughout modern history.”
