Finalists for the 2020 Online News Association (ONA) University of Florida Awards in Investigative Data Journalism have been named. The $15,000 award, which honors high-impact data journalism that is exceptionally well presented, is the largest presented by ONA.

The finalists in the Large Newsroom category are How Trump Reshaped the Presidency by The New York Times and The Quiet Rooms by the Chicago Tribune and ProPublica Illinois. The two finalists in the Small/Medium Newsroom category are STUCK by Southern California Public Radio and The Corona Live Tracker by Norwegian news organization VG.

The winners, who will each receive $7,500, will be recognized at an online ceremony during the virtual ONA20 Everywhere conference on Oct. 16.

The award was established by a gift from the estate of Lorraine Dingman to the College in 2014. Representatives from the winning news organizations will engage with students and faculty as virtual journalists-in-residence to discuss their projects and provide information on investigative journalism techniques.

The 2020 Online Journalism Awards feature 42 prizes across 19 categories. This year’s OJAs also includes 13 awards with a total of $56,000 in prize money. A group of 158 digital media professionals teamed up to screen 1,164 entries and determine semi-finalists. More than 70 judges representing a diverse cross-section of the industry then conferred to determine finalists and winners.
