Jasmine McNealy, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project associate director and Telecommunication associate professor, was quoted in “Analytics Company Looking to Get People Paid for Their Streaming Data” published on TechRepublic.com on May 20.

The article focuses on how streaming sites have seen an uptick in traffic since the COVID-19 pandemic forced people to stay home. Streaming growth has helped to supercharge a lucrative industry dedicated to collecting as much information as possible on viewers and their habits. Streamlytics, a new startup company, is now trying to help users profit from the sale of their data.

According to McNealy, there are dozens of potential issues inherent in a platform like Streamlytics, namely that people take payment in exchange for allowing a company “to basically watch you or look at data about your affinities.”
