Roxane Coche Authors Article on Documentary Chronicling Impact of Martin Luther King Assassination on Memphis
Roxane Coche, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Sports Journalism and Communication associate director and Telecommunication assistant professor, is the author of “Using Oral History to Create a Student-Driven Interdisciplinary Service Learning Project that Culminates in a Feature Documentary” published in Broadcast Media Association’s Journal of Media Education, Volume 11, Number 2, April 2020.
Coche shares her experience with using oral history to create a student-driven interdisciplinary service-learning project that culminated in a feature documentary, “Once More at the River: From MLK to BLM.”
This documentary chronicled Memphis, Tennessee’s preparation for the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in April 1968. The program framed the events of 1968 within a larger context of Memphis history and the struggle for civil rights through the voices of Memphians themselves.
The project was guided by three leaders, whose expertise combined history, broadcasting and documentary experience, and was executed by undergraduate students at the University of Memphis in 2017-2018. Rooted in oral history, the project came to fruition through the empowerment of the students and a partnership with the Memphis National Civil Rights Museum.
The documentary premiered on MLK day in Memphis on Jan. 21, 2019.
