CJC Student Wins Inaugural SPJ College Coronavirus Coverage Award
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism senior and Fresh Take Florida reporter Angela DiMichele is the recipient of the inaugural Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) College Coronavirus Coverage Award for “Stranded in Peru: Coronavirus Strands Gainesville Woman Far from Home.”
SPJ, the Associated Collegiate Press, the Society for News Design, and the National Press Photographers Association have joined forces to recognize college journalists who are admirably covering a pandemic for little or no money while struggling with online classes. Stories are judged in three categories: general content, photography, and design.
DiMichele’s story, which appeared in The Miami Herald, U.S. News & World Report and other publications, was selected as one of four winners for week one of the award from 258 nationwide entries. The story profiled a Gainesville yoga instructor trapped in Peru during the pandemic outbreak.
According to the judges, “The story works well because the writer, using WhatsApp for a video interview, has clearly asked the kind of questions that yield the best material – about the instructor’s nomad life, her best friend, her bathtub-turned-laundry-tub.”
