Probationary Period Extension

To:        UF Tenure-accruing and Permanent-Status-accruing Faculty

From:   Joe Glover, Provost

Re:        Probationary Period Extension

Because of the current interruption in research and service and the added teaching burden involved with switching mid-semester to an online modality, the deans of the colleges have recommended extending the probationary period.

Consequently, I am adding an extra year to the probationary period for current tenure-accruing and permanent status-accruing faculty, with the following understandings.

  1. This does not apply to faculty who are currently in their last year of the probationary period.  Those faculty either have complete packets under review by the Academic Personnel Board or they have chosen not to submit a packet.
  2. This extra year is in addition to any “caps” on extensions of the probationary period.
  3. Faculty may choose to reject irrevocably the one-year extension.  To do so, a faculty member must notify his/her dean in writing by September 30, 2020, and the dean will notify the Office of the Provost and Human Resources.

Just to be clear, faculty need not do anything to obtain this one-year extension.  It is automatic.
