Football Writers Association of America Creates Edward Aschoff Rising Star Award
Edward Aschoff, B.S. Journalism 2008, will be honored by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) with a new award in his memory. The Edward Aschoff Rising Star Award will recognize one promising journalist no older than 34, who has not only the talent and work ethic to succeed in the sports media business, but also the passion to make it better.
Aschoff, an acclaimed ESPN college football reporter, passed on Dec. 24 from previously undetected Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in his lungs. A University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Memorial Fund was recently established in his honor and will provide financial support for students involved in sports journalism.
Founded in 1941, the FWAA consists of 1,400 men and women who cover college football. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include game-day operations, major awards and its annual All-America team.
