Jasmine McNealy Named Associate Director of the Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project
Jasmine McNealy , University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Telecommunication associate professor, has been named Associate Director of the Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project. The Project is dedicated to current and contemporary issues affecting the First Amendment freedoms of speech, press, thought, assembly and petition.
As Associate Director, McNealy will work closely with Project Director Clay Calvert on strategizing and executing First Amendment Project Initiatives. She will be involved with writing and publishing scholarly articles, presenting papers and giving talks locally and nationally, working with students in preparing synopses of longer articles targeted at non-academic audiences, and programming on-campus events.
She also will be attending conferences, workshops and other events, and commenting to the news media on issues relating to her research and teaching.
“Dr. McNealy’s expertise and research on the relationship among free expression, new technologies, information and data collection, and privacy interests puts her on the leading edge in this important realm,” said Calvert. “It also adds a new dimension to the work of the Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project.”
McNealy’s research focuses on privacy, online media, and communities. She holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication with and emphasis in Media Law, and a J.D. from the University of Florida, and a Bachelor of Science degree in both Journalism and Afro-American studies from the University of Wisconsin.
In 2018-19, she served as a fellow at both Data & Society and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.
