Carma Bylund Co-Authors Article on Empathetic Communication in Medical Consultations
Carma Bylund, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Public Relations associate professor, is the co-author of “The Professional Interpreter’s Effect on Empathetic Communication in Medical Consultations: A Qualitative Analysis of Interaction” published in Patient Education and Counseling on Oct 1.
Bylund, along with Demi Krystallidou and Peter Pype, investigated how empathy is expressed by an interpreter to a patient during medical consultations and the how the interpreter may have had an effect on the communication.
Their findings indicated that “in interpreter-mediated consultations, empathetic opportunities are subject to the interpreter’s renditions and the doctor’s actions during interaction.”
