Jasmine McNealy, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Telecommunication assistant professor, has been named a 2018-19 Data & Society Fellow. The Fellowship program supports Data & Society’s ongoing field-building work at the intersection of data-centric technology and society.

As a Fellow, McNealy will join a variety of practitioners and academics including data scientists, engineers, lawyers, librarians, ethnographers, creators, historians and activists. They will pursue individual projects, support one another’s explorations, contribute to core research projects, elaborate on the work of previous Fellow classes, and share insights from their work with staff and the public.

McNealy studies information, communication, and technology with a view toward influencing law and policy. Her research focuses on privacy, online media, communities, and culture.  Her Fellowship project, “Surveillance Literacy and Anti-Surveillance Tactics and Advocacy in Marginalized Groups”, “seeks to observe how surveillance literacy and anti-surveillance education activities have arisen among [marginalized] groups and the examine the cultural, behavioral, and political factors that shape surveillance literacy and anti-surveillance tactics.”
