Andrew Selepak Comments on the Value of Social Media for Restaurants and Health and Fitness

Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications director of the online Master’s program in social media, was quoted in “Five Clever Ways Restaurants Can Use Instagram Stories,” published on NCISilver.com on April 25.

The article focuses on Instagram Stories — the feature on the image-driven social media platform that allows you to post photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. The time limit creates a sense of urgency that drives users to engage right away.

“Customers want to take photos of their meals and share them on Stories, which can be a great way for a restaurant to be seen by more potential customers than their own social media alone,” said Selepak. “But this also means that restaurants should be more active on Stories because they know their customers are out there talking about their establishment, and they need to be part of the conversation.”

Selepak offers strategies for restaurants to engage customers on Instagram including setting the ambience, capturing food preparation, showcasing fresh foods, taking polls, and using the “live” feature to share the fun in real time.

Selepak was also quoted in “Six Ways That Social Media Has Changed Health and Fitness,” published in Aapitv on April 24. The article focuses on the positive impact social media has had on taking care of the body, mind and soul.

Selepak says that online support groups for health and fitness can help people garner support from the masses and can be a motivating factor that leads to success.

“Sometimes we just need a few Facebook likes to keep going back to the gym. These individuals are not showing off their new body after two visits to the gym. Rather, they are looking for positive support and reinforcement from friends and family to keep going back,” he said.
