Frank LoMonte Comments on Freedom of Information Trends
Frank LoMonte, director of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Brechner Center for Freedom of Information is the author of the opinion column “Rich White Businessmen Aren’t Best Judges of College Presidents,” published in The Atlanta Journal Constitution “Get Schooled” blog on Dec. 17.
LoMonte focuses on high-level Georgia government hires that are often decided behind closed doors even though taxpayers pay their salaries. He asserts that the results of these dealings are often a competition to see who can be the most secretive in filling some of state government’s most powerful jobs.
According to LoMonte, the president of a public university is equivalent to the mayor of a mid-sized city. Nobody would want to live in a city where the mayor was elected by 19 rich business executives in a locked room.
In addition, LoMonte was cited in “Empowerment, Making a Difference, is REAL News” published in JEA’s Scholastic Press Rights on Dec. 18. The article focuses on high school, middle school and elementary school student journalists who want to cover real news that is important to them and their communities.
The article shares LoMonte’s perspective on censored news and the promulgation of fake news by school officials.
