Lauren Griffin Pens Article on the Effects of Science Ignorance
Lauren Griffin, manager of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journal of Public Interest Communications, is the co-author of “Take That Chocolate Milk Survey with a Grain of Salt.” The article, in collaboration with Troy Campbell, assistant professor of Marketing at the University of Oregon, was published on The Conversation on June 29.
The piece uses recent survey results that showed that 7% Americans believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows (a false statement). Through this example, they discuss the role of media in misinterpreting data for audiences. “The fact that media coverage of this survey was reported so widely and with so few caveats,” Campbell and Griffin explain “showed that many people are not skeptical of the science they read.”
