Janice Krieger Receives 2015 UF Foundation Preeminence Term Professorship
Dr. Janice Krieger, director of the CJC STEM Translational Communication Research program, is the recipient of the 2015 UF Foundation Preeminence Term Professorship. The professorship, one of two awarded by the Foundation, recognizes extraordinary accomplishments by individuals and the prestige they bring to the University.
The designation includes a $25,000 cash award for Krieger to advance her research efforts including hiring research assistants, purchasing equipment and participating in special training and collaborations.
Endowed-term professorships are representative of UF’s commitment to, and investment in, faculty members whose work is transforming lives. Dr. Krieger was selected for looking at how to best share complex information with laypeople and on informed decision-making at the intersection of health and science.
Dr. Krieger is an expert in health-related communication. Her research focuses on how to clearly communicate and put into context complex information for the lay person, for example explaining to people how and why medical recommendations change so doctors maintain credibility. Her area of concentration features translational communication in health and risk decision-making situations, such as clinical trials, substance-abuse prevention and the HPV vaccine.
“The heart and soul of a university is its faculty — the men and women who come to work each day to share their knowledge with tomorrow’s leaders and to search for ways to enhance our lives,” University of Florida Provost Joe Glover said. “Julie and Janice exemplify that through their research and dedication to their disciplines. These term professorships provide funding that will help them address real-life issues.” (Julie Maupin-Furlow, a microbiology and cell science professor in UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, also received the award).
This award is the latest in a series of recognitions for Dr. Krieger, including her selection to this year’s Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy and to UF’s Advanced Leadership for Academics and Professionals Program.
