Yu-Hao Lee named Assistant Professor of Telecommunication
The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications has hired Yu-Hao Lee, an expert in emerging media, as an Assistant Professor of Telecommunication, Dean Diane McFarlin announced today. He will join the College’s faculty this fall.
“Yu-Hao’s interests in media psychology, persuasion, social influence and online collaboration are vital to strengthening our College’s efforts in emerging media: the use of interactive technologies, video gaming, and computer-mediated communication,” McFarlin said. “He’s the first of several new faculty members the College will be hiring this spring.”
Lee is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Oklahoma, where he is part of a team operating under a $10.5 million grant to study Advanced Intelligence interactive games used in education and training.
Lee earned his a Ph.D. in media and information studies from Michigan State University in 2013, a master’s degree in journalism from National Taiwan University in 2005 and a bachelor’s degree in economics from National Taiwan University in 2003.
His current research includes understanding motivation and engagement in serious video games, including the cognitive processes and response to persuasion through games; the effects of “clicktivism” (i.e. low cost, low risk online activism) on personal gratification and future intentions to take action; and applying game mechanics (AKA gamification) to instructional design.
From 2005-07, Lee worked as a reporter for Commonwealth Magazine in Taiwan, covering political and environmental issues, and from 2007-08 worked as a researcher on sustainable urban planning for the Green Architecture Organization.
