Spiro Kiousis has accepted the position of chair of the Department of Public Relations, effective July 1, Dean Terry Hynes announced.

Kiousis, who joined the faculty in 2002, earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas-Austin, his A.M. from Stanford, and his B.A. from the University of San Francisco.

He has published numerous articles in top refereed journals, including 12 since his appointment to UF. He is currently a manuscript reviewer for nine scholarly journals. He has demonstrated excellence in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in public relations management, writing, strategy, and campaigns, mass communication theory and persuasion theory and research.

Kiousis has served as a member of 12 doctoral dissertation committees, chair or co-chair of 11 and a member of eight master’s committees, and as graduate coordinator for the political communication sequence.

He is one of only two current faculty members with APR certification and has professional experience in public relations, marketing, and sports reporting. He also has established an excellent record of service at the department and university level, including serving as mentor for five students in UF’s Minority Mentor Program.

Executive Associate Dean John Wright commented, “The combination of Spiro’s exemplary record of teaching and scholarship, professional experience, personal integrity and his sincere commitment to the students, the faculty and the College make him an ideal selection to chair the Department of Public Relations.”

Spiro will succeed Kathy Kelly, who will return to full-time faculty status as a professor in Public Relations beginning August 16.
